News October 17, 2025

BRANTFORD — The Ontario government is investing $4,859,083.00 to help create supportive housing in Brantford that will provide culturally appropriate support services to Indigenous community members, including Brantford Native Housing.

“Safe and affordable housing is vital to strong Indigenous communities,” said Will Bouma, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brantford-Brant. “This announcement furthers our commitment to supporting Indigenous people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in Brantford, and to working with partners to expand culturally appropriate housing options across the region.”

Located at 309 Campbell Street in Brantford, this supportive housing project includes enhancements to better serve both residents and the surrounding community.”

“Supportive housing will help vulnerable people have access to safe and secure housing to help them turn the page to new and exciting chapters in their lives,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Working in partnership with our Indigenous partners, our government will continue to get more affordable and supportive housing with wrap-around supports built to protect Indigenous people at-risk of or experiencing homelessness to ensure they have a roof over their head.

In 2024-25, the Indigenous Supportive Housing Program (ISHP) provided $41.5 million in funding to deliver culturally appropriate housing supports and services for Indigenous peoples experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

Quick facts

  • Launched in 2022, the Indigenous Supportive Housing (ISHP) is 100 per cent provincially funded.
  • Through the Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP) and ISHP, Service Managers and Indigenous Program Administrators have the flexibility to allocate provincial funding to programs and services that address and prevent homelessness in their communities, such as rent supplements, emergency shelters, and supportive housing including capital projects.
  • In recent years, Ontario has increased HPP and ISHP funding by over 40 per cent to approximately $700 million this year, to help those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and to support community organizations delivering supportive housing.

Quotes

“This new build will represent a powerful new beginning. It will expand our capacity to welcome more women and their children, offering space for counselling, in-house programming, youth mentorship, Elder engagement, and holistic, culturally grounded care all rooted in the Indigenous ways of healing and community.

We are profoundly grateful to the Province of Ontario, the OAHSS  and  OFIFC for their steadfast commitment and investment in Indigenous-led solutions. Their continued partnership makes it possible for us to grow this vital work and ensure that every Indigenous woman, youth, and child has a safe place to call home a place to heal, to belong, and to thrive.”
